Cicilline Responds to Republican Attacks
Saturday, April 30, 2011
Freshman Congressman David Cicilline fired back at the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) in a fundraising e-mail to supporters Friday.
Cicilline’s message came after the NRCC announced it was making targeted phone calls to constituents in 23 different districts throughout the country, including Rhode Island’s 1st District. The calls are meant to expose specific Democrats who the Republicans believe are supporting the government’s $4 billion per day spending habits.

But Cicilline said the targeted calls are just another attempt to deflect the Republicans’ true agenda.
“It’s no secret that I have been an outspoken critic of the Ryan Budget and the Republicans’ desire to end Medicare as we know it,” Cicilline said. “Because I have been speaking out against the disastrous consequences of their budget, the National Republican Party has locked their targets on my seat. “
Cicilline offered a simple message to his supporters: “The Republicans just don’t get it.”
“The National Republican Congressional Committee is already pouring money into Rhode Island, bombarding residents with ‘robo-calls’ spewing Republican propaganda,” he said. “These attempts to silence my criticism against their wrongheaded budget must mean that we are doing something right. They know they’ve put forth an irresponsible budget and can’t win on the substance.”
NRCC Targeting Vulnerable Cicilline
The NRCC sent out a press release Thursday saying it was targeting Congressmen in 23 districts. Although the message is the exact same for all 23 Democrats, it is believed the Republicans perceive Cicilline as vulnerable given the vast amount of negative local press the first-term Congressman has received.
Last week, a City Council report blamed the former Providence mayor for what new Mayor Angel Taveras has called a “category five fiscal storm.” The report suggests Cicilline mismanaged the city budget and even violated the City Charter with some of the decisions he made.
But the NRCC chose to focus on Cicilline’s support for the President’s spending habits.
“While families throughout Rhode Island have to cut back and live within their means, David Cicilline continues to support Democrat policies that spend money we don’t have and borrows money from countries like China,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “These calls highlight what Cicilline seems to forget, which is that there are real consequences to continuing his policies that borrow $4 billion a day to fuel his addiction to government spending. As growing debt, interest and inflation threaten the economy, Cicilline’s Rhode Island constituents simply want to know when he will stop burdening them with more debt.”
Cicilline Stays On Message
But rather than focusing on how to create jobs, rebuild the economy and protect the elderly, Cicilline claims the Republicans continue to change the subject.
“Instead of an honest dialogue about eliminating tax breaks for Big Oil Corporations, Republicans have chosen to spend time and money on politics, and they have targeted me for speaking out against their budget,” Cicilline said.
As the local - and now national - onslaught continues, Cicilline’s goal is to stay on message. He ended his e-mail asking Rhode Islanders to pay attention to the real issues plaguing the state and the entire country.
“With your help, we can end this Republican sideshow and get the discussion back to creating jobs and rebuilding our economy for all Americans.”
