Congressman David Cicilline yesterday became one of the original co-sponsors for a bill that would ban high-capacity ammunition magazines, like what was used in the Arizona shooting incident.

The bill’s main sponsor is U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-New York. A total of 42 House members are co-sponsoring the bill. The bill institutes a 10-round maximum for ammunition magazines, a limit in place in four states and nationwide when the previous federal assault weapons ban was in effect.

“One of the greatest threats to peace in our communities today is gun violence. It is time for us to revisit our nation’s gun laws. As the former Mayor of Providence, I have worked hard to reduce gun violence, and was a founding member of the Mayors’ Coalition against Illegal Guns,” Cicilline said.

“In 2009, we made several recommendations for federal consideration specifically designed to prevent attacks like the one in Tucson. Representative McCarthy’s bill, which I am proud to co-sponsor, gets to the heart of these recommendations by banning these dangerous weapons of mass terror.”
