Chafee’s Budget: Cuts in Health and Human Services

Wednesday, February 01, 2012

Health and Human services makes up the largest chunk of the state's budget, so it is almost always the first to see cuts. This year is no different.

Governor Chafee hopes to end dental care for adults on Medicaid; eliminate a support group for youth in the Training School; and reduce the YESS Aftercare Services, which assists young people aging out of DCYF, by 20 percent.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Steven Costantino, who previously served as chairman of the House Finance Committee, said that while the cuts are painful, they could be much worse.

“If you know some of the other options you could take, there are always worse options,” Costantino said.
