Chafee’s Budget: $80 Million in Cuts

The Governor’s budget aims to strike some balance between tax increases and spending cuts to balance the budget.
His biggest cuts to the budget include:
■ The deepest cuts—a total of $60 million—are in the five departments overseen by the Office of Health and Human Services. Chafee says the state can find the money by without affecting services to citizens—by making those services more efficient, improving oversight, and paying vendors at the same rates.
■ An estimated $20 million will be skimmed off other departments throughout state government.
