Chafee Picks Roberts for Health Care Task Force

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

Governor-elect Lincoln Chafee announced yesterday that he has tapped Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts to head up a Joint Healthcare Task Force to make sure the Ocean State is ready to implement the next wave of reforms of the new national health care law.

“Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts has decades of experience working on healthcare-related issues, and as such she is well-positioned to lead this task force. The Lieutenant Governor knows, as I do, that this topic is too important to fall victim to partisan politics,” Chafee said. “This task force will be filled with those who are best able to address all facets of the issue in an orderly, efficient, and advantageous manner—regardless of their political affiliation.”

Roberts focused on health issues

As Lieutenant Governor, Roberts has been active on health care related issues. She formed the Healthy R.I. Task Force, chairs the Long-Term Care Coordinating Council, and has been a strong supporter of the Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner.

“Health care is a crucial issue in our state budget, and we must get the reforms right for Rhode Island families and businesses,” Roberts said. “I’m proud to partner with our new Governor to make that happen.”

Roberts will serve as the chair of the task force, which Chafee said will begin meeting soon after he takes office in January. His transition team has yet to announce other details on the task force, such as its membership.

Cooperation and communication

Chafee pointed to appointment as an example of the spirit of cooperation with other state officers which he hopes to make the hallmark of his administration—something he suggested had been lacking in his soon-to-be predecessor, Don Carcieri.

“Communication is the most important thing and that’s what’s been missing in the past four years particularly,” Chafee said. “Communication is the most important start and when something comes up—make sure that the Lieutenant Governor knows about it.”

“So when it snows we’ll be working together,” he quipped.
