UPDATED: Flanders Leaves Board of Regents to be Central Falls Receiver

Monday, January 31, 2011

Governor Lincoln Chafee has appointed former state Supreme Court Justice Robert Flanders to be the new receiver for the City of Central Falls.

The appointment means that Flanders, who has been a prominent supporter of Education Commissioner Deborah Gist and her reforms, will not be returning to the Board of Regents. "He and Governor Chafee agree that the job of receiver is so substantial that he couldn't hold both positions," said Chafee spokesman Christian Vareika. Flanders will continue to serve as chairman until the state Senate confirms a new appointee.

As the new receiver for Central Falls, Flanders will be replacing retired Judge Mark Pfeiffer, who was appointed by Gov. Don Carcieri.

“I have known and respected Justice Flanders for a long time, and have come to value his insight and advice,” Chafee said. “His judgment, his varied and extensive experience in government, law and education, and his dedication to the people of Rhode Island make him well suited for the position of Central Falls Receiver. I am confident that he has the ability, the background, the needed skills, and the commitment required to address the considerable challenges involved with transforming Central Falls into a successful community.”

Come on man, this is another delay in a critical problem in RI. Chafee doesn't like what Judge Mark Pfeiffer concluded after a year of work by saying CF will not be able to cut it with it's overhead that it now carries. He also recommended that CF is completely reorganized including all contracts as the only way to go forward for CF,RI.
We will find out more on the new ex judge to see what he brings to the table, let's hope it is not another empty suite.
