Central Falls Elementary School Slated for Closure

Thursday, June 09, 2011

The Central Falls School District is considering closing the Robertson Elementary School, a spokeswoman has confirmed.

“Robertson school is being considered for closing due to a decline in enrollment,” said Yaviri Grosso, a spokeswoman for the district. “Discussions are still being held at this time so this decision has not been finalized. These discussions will include teachers and parents.”

Grosso said Robertson, which currently houses fifth graders, has an enrollment of 189 students. Next year, the fifth grade enrollment is expected to drop nearly in half—to just one hundred students, according to Grosso.

Sources in the school district tell GoLocalProv that the plan is to move the students at the elementary school to the Calcutt Middle School, which has sixth through eighth graders. “I don’t see how they’re going to fit all of us,” one Robertson Elementary teacher told GoLocalProv. “To my knowledge right now the middle school is pretty full. We don’t know where we’re fitting in this puzzle.”

Sources: Charter school moving in

The teacher expressed concern that fifth graders would be attending school with older students.

“I think it’s … drastic,” the teacher said. “As a parent I would not want my child to be in a middle school as a fifth grader with eighth graders.”

Currently the district is considering renting the Robertson building to the Democracy Prep charter school, sources say. Grosso said she could not confirm that. “At this point, I don’t know what’s going in its place,” she said.

The possible closure is expected to be discussed at Central Falls Board of Trustees meeting on June 14.

Under Gallo's tenure the district has lost enough students to close 2 buildings! Perhaps that is her design anyway.

inside opinion

WOW....last week the parents and teachers were not involved in the decision to close the school. I wonder why the change of heart. Could it be because the information about the closure was inadvertently leaked? Only after parents rallied together to voice their disdain for this administration and its LACK of transparency, are they being invited to particapate. A little too late. It's time this egomaniacal administration realizes they've been exposed. "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" isn't working anymore. It is not about you, it is about the children. STEP DOWN!

Ok, Are they still sending kids to fairlawn? What happens to them?
Did they really spend money to fix up ST Leos to send CF kids there two years ago?
Fiscal irresponsibility and mismanagement

Can the city overturn this since they maintain public schools?

crystal smith

if they have a school with alot of room, why don't they go back to the old way, make Robertson, ella Risk, Veterans 1-5, put the kids in the right school, closest to there home, that will cut back on the bussing. this city is renting a school in Lincoln, have a Kindergarten school in the city half full, and they want to close up an Elementry school.....? makes no sense to me

This is completely unbelievable. Gallo is closing a school located IN Central Falls that the district just updated with classroom microphones and wireless internet. While they are renting a school in Lincoln that has a severe mold problem.

Putting 5th graders in the middle school is outrageous. I anticipate the parents will then choose to send their children to the charter schools Gallo is helping out. . . appears people are right, Gallo is slowly breaking up the district and selling it off to charter schools. Her hand is revealed.

Wait one damn minute! The school buildings in Central Falls are owned by the CITY! Not the school district. Who gave Gallo permission to hand over anything that belongs to the city! We have been a city since 1895 and over the past year we have lost everything including our right to a representative city government. Isn't it about time we tell Gallo to stick with school matters, not handing over school buildings for her pet projects. It's time to shove this pretend school superintendent out the door. Her mismanagement, heavy handed, slick way of operating our schools has only hurt the children, parents, and teachers of Central Falls. It must be tough to go through life thinking you are smarter than everybody else. Resign now Fran.

Don't you love CF? At a faculty meeting on Tuesday, the principal tells the staff that "nothing is definite" & that all input is welcome but today the 4th graders get a letter telling them they will go to Calcutt! This is the 3rd year in a row that 5th graders have been isolated from peers. Yup, we're here for the kids!
