Chefs-in-training will now be able to earn a Culinary Arts Assistant certificate though a program offered through the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) starting at the Lincoln campus on Feb. 28.

The 16-credit Culinary Arts Assistant certificate program now awards students general education credits to continue their education in any field they choose. Created in consultation with restaurant industry veterans, the program is taught by food service professionals. Graduates leave with the skills ranging from food preparation and sanitation to menu-writing and business skills, to work in a field that the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training identified as one of the fastest growing in the state. The program boasts a 90 percent job placement success rate.

From the Classroom to the Workplace

After some preliminary classroom instruction, students will spend 15 to 18 hours in the kitchen every week, followed by a 75-hour professional internship. “Students now will have a seamless way of taking these credits and applying them to programs that have free electives,” explains Peter Woodberry, Dean of Business, Science and Technology at CCRI. He went on to explain that the certificate credits will transfer to most collegiate institutions, or graduates will find plenty of opportunity to transition directly into the workplace.
