From great libraries to delicious dining, four Rhode Island colleges have been honored in a new set of rankings released by BestColleges.com.

The online resource site for students and their parents has compiled profiles on more than 700 colleges and universities. Rhode Island schools placed in 4 of the 9 categories released. To rank schools BestColleges used student surveys, faculty surveys, independent research, ranking systems, and the input of "highly credible and authoritative sources."

Brown University: Best Colleges For Non-Traditional Learners

Brown was named by BestColleges as one of 27 best schools in the country for non-traditional learners. "Brown University, although part of the Ivy League, is structured very differently from the others," wrote BestColleges. "Part of a student’s responsibility is to devise a curriculum for themselves with assistance from the advisers. With the number of resources Brown has to offer, the possibilities are endless, providing a truly unique educational experience. Other New England schools named to this list were College of the Atlantic, Hampshire College, Bennington College, Smith College and Trinity College.

Providence College: Best Catholic Colleges

PC was named among 48 Catholic colleges as the best in the US, emphasizing academics, faculty and faith, according to BestColleges. Providence College "emphasizes collaborative teaching and active learning as demonstrated by collaborative research on cancer receptors, field trips to tropical rain forests in Belize, sociological studies on homelessness and research into presidential elections," according to BestColleges.

Roger Williams University: Best College Dining Hall

Roger Williams University made the top list of best dining halls along with fellow New England colleges MIT, UMass Amherst, and Tufts. "Committed to using fresh, locally obtained and sustainable products whenever possible, the dining available at Roger Williams University is bar none," according to BestColleges."With several dining facilities available on campus, students are never far from a nutritious and delicious meal. In addition to the main dining room, the Upper Commons, where everything is a gigantic all-you-can-eat buffet, the other locations have plenty of grab-and-go sandwiches, soups, and pizza for quick bites on the run."

RISD: Best College Library

"Even when the world is moving digital, college libraries remain an important focal point for many university students. It is a place where students can study in a great environment while having access to many books that aren’t in digital format," according to BestColleges. RISD's library got top marks not because it's beautiful (which has won it accolades in the past), but the extent of its resources and archives. RISD shared Best Library honors with fellow New England colleges Boston College, Middlebury College, and Yale University.
