BREAKING: Providence Teachers Approve Contract

The Providence Teachers have ratified a new contract with a city, aimed at staving off terminations and saving more than $50 million in savings over the life of the contract.

 

The vote was overwhelmingly in favor, 868 to 79.

“This was a very difficult contract, under difficult circumstances, and the teachers really stepped up to the plate. We did what was necessary to have this work for the city, the teachers, and most importantly, for the students,” comments Providence Teachers Union president, Steve Smith.

Smith added: “I want to emphasize that bringing every one of the terminated teachers back was the determining factor. This is why the teachers voted so strongly in favor of the contract.”

Voting began August 4 and concluded today.
