BREAKING NEWS: Vast Majority of RI Opposes Some Chafee Taxes

A new Brown University poll has found that a vast majority of Rhode Islanders—approximately 80 percent—opposes a plan to add a one percent sales tax to home heating oil, tap water, and textbooks.

The poll also found that Governor Lincoln Chafee’s approval rating is stuck at 32 percent.

The poll did find majority support for some other proposed new taxes:
■ 59 percent support the sale tax on dry cleaning
■ 57 percent are OK with having a sales tax on movies and concert tickets

Also, 58 percent backed reducing the sales tax from 7 to 6 percent while 35 percent were opposed.

The survey, which was conducted between March 11 to 13, was based on a statewide random sample of statewide random sample of 425 registered voters It had a margin of error of about plus or minus 4.7 percentage points.
