Two men were shot as they sat in their car outside the Institute for the Study and Practice of Non-Violence on Oxford Street in Providence on Friday.  The incident took place in the early afternoon.

The shooter fled down a side street,  Both victims did not immediately appear to have life-threateing wounds.

Teny Gross (at right in photo), the Institute's executive director, said that the men were waiting for another party who they had brought to the Institute and was inside the building at the time.  After hearing the shots, "The staff ran out and responded," Gross said.

"Violence is something that affects people.  It's what we do," Gross explained after de-briefing his staff and preparing to go visit the victims in the hospital this evening.

The Institute was founded by members of St. Michael’s Church team ministry in 2001 as a training organization, with the goal of providing a long-term solution to violence. The organization's Web site says it now has a $1.8 million budget, a board of 30 members, and a staff of 32. Its mission is "to teach, by word and example, the principles and practices of nonviolence, and to foster a community that addresses potentially violent situations with nonviolent solutions."
