BREAKING NEWS: Taveras Names Communications Director

Providence Mayor-elect Angel Taveras has picked Melissa Withers to be the Director of Communications for his incoming administration.

Withers is the executive director of the Business Innovation Factory, a nationally known organization that promotes new ideas in health care, education, and entrepreneurship. Withers had previously been communications director for the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation and the assistant director of communications and public affairs at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“Open and effective communication will be a top priority of my administration,” said Mayor-elect Taveras. “Melissa brings unique strengths and expertise to this position. She will work to reinvigorate the City’s communication platform and create new opportunities for citizens, businesses and community leaders from each of our city’s 25 neighborhoods to connect with the Mayor’s office—something that will be invaluable to moving Providence forward.”

Withers is a Rhode Island native and lives in Providence with her husband Jeremy and their son.

“I am honored that Mayor-elect Taveras has selected me for this position. I love the City of Providence, both for what we are and what we can be,” Withers said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to join this next generation of leadership and look forward to working with the community to re-energize the City’s approach to communication and citizen engagement.”
