State Police Colonel Brendan Doherty has resigned, after a public controversy over the Secure Communities immigration program.

Just last week, Governor Lincoln Chafee muzzled Doherty after the colonel criticized Providence Public Safety Commission Steven Pare for critical remarks he made about the Secure Communities program.

State officials this afternoon issued statements expressing disappointment over his departure.

“Colonel Doherty is one of our finest law enforcement officials who has earned the respect and trust of his colleagues and the citizens of Rhode Island,” said Attorney General Peter Kilmartin. “His commitment to upholding the law and protecting our communities is unparalleled. His resignation is a terrible loss for the law enforcement community and for the state of Rhode Island. Our offices have worked well together, and I look forward to seeking his advice and counsel in the future on law enforcement issues.”

Once Doherty leaves, the State Police are likely to be in the hands of his second-in-command until a replacement is named. The number two official at the state agency is Lieutenant Colonel White, a twenty-four (24) year veteran of the Rhode Island State Police, who serves as the Deputy Superintendent - Chief of Field Operations.
