BREAKING NEWS: Some Providence Schools Will Close Next Year
Thursday, February 24, 2011
Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is certain that the city will have to close some schools next year in order to close the budget gap, but no decisions have been made about how many or which ones, spokeswoman Melissa Withers told GoLocalProv this evening.
“There will be fewer teachers, there will be fewer schools, but we’re still working through the plan,” Withers said. “We’re going to go through the process. We’re going to make the right decision and we’re going to roll out this decision in the right away.”
The announcement comes the day after layoff notices were sent out to all the teachers in the district. The notices had to be mailed in order to meet a March 1 statutory deadline for letting teachers know about any possible changes to their employment status. The city does not face a similar deadline when it comes to any announcements about school closures.
