Thursday, February 03, 2011
Providence Fire Chief George Farrell today announced he is retiring, bringing a close to three decades of service to the city and the state.
“It has been an honor to serve the people of Providence and to work with the talented and brave men and women of the Providence Fire Department. It has been a great pleasure to serve under Mayor Angel Taveras and Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare. Leaving is difficult for me, however it is time for me to focus on my health and spend more time with my wife and family,” Chief Farrell said.
Farrell, who has been battling cancer, will leave his position “sometime in the next two months,” according to a city press release.
