Dean Esserman is resigning his position as Police Chief, multiple sources are telling GoLocalProv.

The reason for his departure was not immediately known. His resignation is expected to be effective June 30.

His resignation comes weeks after a GoLocalProv exclusively reported that there was an underage drinking party at the chief’s home on the East Side of Providence. For two hours, a GoLocalProv reporter observed high school students exiting the chief’s house—at one point, a group of eight were seen carrying a case of beer. Esserman claimed said that he did not approve of the underage drinking and immediately dispersed students when he learned of it.

That report prompted an investigation by Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare into whether any laws were broken in the incident.

The underage party was the latest in a string of setbacks for the chief. Earlier this year, Pare suspended the chief when he yelled at a subordinate police officer at an event outside of the city.

The chief is also unpopular with the city police union, which held a no-confidence vote in him two years ago.
