The bill to create civil unions for gay couples passed the House Judiciary Committee this evening on a 9 to 3 vote.

Reps Mike Chippendale, Doreen Costa, and Job Brien dissented.

The vote reportedly came after hours of overwhelming testimony against the bill. Both sides of the gay marriage debate have criticized the compromise measure: opponents of gay marriage say it goes too far, while supporters say it does not go far enough in granting full equality to gay couples.

“I’m very disappointed,” Costa, R-North Kingstown, told GoLocalProv. “You’re supposed to be there to represent the people and everybody was there in opposition to it and it still passed.”

Costa said it’s time to move beyond the gay marriage debate. “We need to start working on the budget. This stuff needs to be tabled,” she said.

Rep Peter Petrarca, D-Lincoln, the lead sponsor of the bill, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
