BREAKING: Lusi to be Named Providence Schools Superintendent

Monday, May 07, 2012

The Providence School Board will appoint Dr. Susan Lusi Superintendent of schools at a meeting set for this evening, GoLocalProv has learned.

Lusi, who has served as the interim head of schools since last July, had earned the support of teachers, administrators and union officials in the weeks leading up to tonight’s vote. Last week, an elementary school principal gathered 100 signatures in an online petition that called on Mayor Angel Taveras to keep Lusi in her position.

The only question now, sources say, is whether the vote will be unanimous.

Board members were said to be impressed with Thomas Darden, a Philadelphia-based educator who emerged as the other finalist in the search. But after mulling the decision over, the majority opted to support Lusi.
