BREAKING: Judge Darigan to Retire

Superior Court Judge Francis J. Darigan Jr. plans to retire this year, GoLocalProv has learned.

The exact date of Darigan’s departure is unclear, but multiple sources say he is likely to leave the bench by February.

Darigan was first appointed as a District Court judge in 1984 by Governor Garrahy. He was appointed to the Superior Court by Governor Sundlun in 1991. In 2009, he was on Governor Carcieri’s shortlist of candidate to be appointed to the Supreme Court, but Carcieri ended up selecting Paul A. Suttell.

Darigan, who served on the Providence City Council from 1970-74, has presided over a number of high profile cases during his time on the bench, including the Station Nightclub fire. More recently, he declared a mistrial in the case against Providence Detective Robert DeCarlo, who was convicted of assaulting Luis Medonca before his conviction was vacated.
