As much as 39 million gallons of crude oil have been spilled into the Gulf of Mexico since April and one local activist is urging his fellow Rhode Islanders to make the company behind the leak pay.

Bill Fischer of True North Communications, a Providence communications firm, is organizing a boycott of the 67 British Petroleum gas stations within 30 miles of the capital city.

“We are absolutely sickened by the crippling impact the BP oil spill has had on the environment and the Gulf Coast region,” Fischer  said. “It seems unimaginable to think about the effects on Rhode Island’s coastal waters if the disaster had happened in our area. Rhode Island can send a small but important message to BP executives that we will not support corporate entities that are poor environmental neighbors.”

Fischer has launched a Facebook page and a Twitter account, @boycottbp_RI, for the effort. So far, nearly 400 fans have signed onto to the effort via Facebook.

“BP is quite possibly responsible for the worst environmental disaster in history and it happened because they put profit before the safety of the planet,” Fischer said. “The long-term effects of this disaster will be felt for generations. The only way the consumer can send a direct message is to boycott BP products at this time.”
