The Ocean State may be the smallest state in the country, but a local activist is hoping to catch the attention of BP executives with a campaign to boycott all of the BP gas stations in the area.

Organizer Bill Fischer said he hopes to send a message to the company in the wake of the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. “Quite frankly, my motivation is disgust and outrage,” Fischer said. “It’s that simple.”

His campaign officially kicked off yesterday with a Facebook fan page, depicting the corporate symbol for BP, covered in oil.

Fischer said his campaign was targeted mainly at BP, which he accused of not investing a safe infrastructure—but he also expressed dismay over how the Obama administration had responded, saying the President should have sent the U.S. Navy in to stop the leak.

“The fact that the leak is continuing now is just simply offensive,” Fischer said. “I would have liked to have a bit more of a response from the administration.”

There are 67 BP gas stations within 30 miles of Providence, according to the Facebook page. Fischer said the only way to catch the attention of corporate executives at BP was to affect their bottom line, even if it had an impact on local business. “That’s certainly the lesser of two evils,” he said.
