I'm tired of the racism that goes on through so many of the actions of our government and police department. We are trying to start a conversation. If we can work together and sit down and talk and figure things out, rather than being condescending, if we can find common ground I do think we can solve some of these problems," said Sam Muskelly-Marcher.
The event took police during the hieght of a jam-packed Federal Hill. The neighborhood was in the third day of their celebration of Columbus Day Weekend.
"We're here to fight for change, whether it be social change, economic change, or change to the way police departments are treating people of color. If you look at cases of police violence or police brutality or even as something as minor as a traffic stop it's almost always black people and people of color who are suffering," said Victoria Ruiz, Community Activist with the Step Up Coalition.
"When the Providence Police Department released a statement recently about #BlackLivesMatter, we found it disrespectful and ignorant of what people locally, state-wide and nationwide are saying about the police."
The protestors issued the following letter.
