This is my old squad...

...when we first got to Afghanistan. This was at beginning of deployment, and right before a mission.

We're all still here in Aghanistan, but one. The guy behind me, to my left, went AWOL. I don't know exactly why he left, but he was pretty scared. He went on leave and just never came back.

He lasted a month.

I would never go AWOL!! NEVER. I would rather die than desert my guys. And I've come close on occasion - close to dying, not deserting my guys!

Joshua Boccanfuso grew up in Warwick and Cranston, went to Cranston West HS and the culinary program at the Cranston Area Career and Technical Center. He enrolled in the Army in October of 2008. He is currently stationed at combat outpost Zerok in Afghanistan, and endures regular mortar attacks. In special correspondence with GoLocalProv's Tracey Minkin, he shares his images and experiences with GoLocalProv readers. His third photo will appear tomorrow.
