Addiction Recovery Event at Statehouse Today
Tuesday, April 26, 2011
Rhode Island Communities for Addiction Recovery (RICARES) will hold its 12th Annual Legislative Day tomorrow, April 26.
The event — to be held at the Rhode State House Rotunda from 2-4 p.m. — will highlight the needs and contributions of Rhode Islanders in recovery from addiction.
Starting at 3 p.m., several speakers will address attendees, emphasizing that "Recovery Voices Count," — that people in recovery vote, pay taxes, and are involved in the community. Awards will be conferred to Representative Patricia Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick) for Legislator of the Year and Kathleen Carty, Ph.D., MSW, LICSW for Advocate of the Year.
Confirmed speakers include:
■ Luis Estrada, formerly incarcerated person in long term recovery
■ Jessia Gianfranco, a mother in long-term recovery who was precluded from involvement in her daughter's school activities
■ Sen. John Tassoni (D-Dist. 22, North Smithfield, Smithfield), sponsor of legislation establishing a recovery high school, and
■ Craig S. Stenning, Director of the RI Department of Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Hospitals
