slides: Where The Smart Kids Are Going To College 2013

Saturday, June 01, 2013

As graduation season approaches for high school seniors, GoLocalProv takes a look at where the 3 top-ranking students from each of Rhode Island’s 60-plus technical, vocational, private, public and religious secondary schools will be attending college in the fall of 2014.

The admissions process is a rigorous one, and, as college admissions counselor and GoLocalProv contributor Cristiana Quinn explains, it is a process that’s being re-examined by parents and students alike. “Students this year have begun turning down more competitive schools they would graduate from with larger amounts of debt because they received a large merit aid package at, say, a reputable state school like the University of Vermont,” said Quinn. Merit aid is a type of financial aid awarded to students based on academic, athletic or artistic expertise and it is becoming increasingly more relevant in the world of college applications.

City schools are becoming increasingly popular, according to Quinn, as evidenced by the dramatic rise in number of applications to schools such as Boston University, UCLA and U. Chicago.

As students and parents adapt, so too do colleges. This past year saw more and more schools (particularly private, liberal arts colleges in New England) begin offering two separate early decision deadlines in an effort to more accurately gauge their yield. By offering a second round of early decision, which typically occurs in January, colleges are able to gather commitments from a larger number of students.

Finally, the efforts undertaken by RI high schools on behalf of their seniors can make all the difference. Russell Paone, Guidance Department Chair at North Providence High School, describes a painstaking process that begins with Common Application practice questions and sections in students' junior year. "Overall, the Common Application simplifies the process and the effect seems to be more students applying to more schools. However, this has added to the work of my counselors, because of the way we personalize the experience. With more applications comes more visits to our offices."

Where are RI's top seniors heading off to college in the fall? See below.

am i the only one who wonders why a college education is as costly as it is what makes the price so high

jon paycheck

you don't have to look too hard...ask senator elizabeth warren who was paid $350,000 to teach one course at harvard.

she is presently trying to get student loan rates lowered--NOTE ONLY FOR NEW LOANS AND ONLY FOR ONE YEAR. not very effective but gets good press.

maybe she can look in the mirror and donate the money she made from harvard for teaching one class to scholarships for other students.

but then again---the libs - do as i say, not as i do.

It appears a precedent has been set by a former law student who had $54,000 of his $85k in student loans absolved through bankruptcy.

what cheer

No surprise that I only saw one student going to Bryant. Bryant used to be a popular business school for Rhode Islanders, until they priced themselves out of the ballpark. Now it's full of foreign students. Fortunately, we are lucky to have such good public colleges here in RI.
