Multiple intersections in Williston and Burlington made appearances on the list of most dangerous intersections in Vermont, but spots in Winooski City and Rutland City topped the list for frequency, and severity, of accidents.

Bruce Nyquist with the Vermont Agency of Transportation addressed the issued of highway -- and intersection -- safety, and noted examples of some of the state's recent successes.

"Some of the intersections that we've addressed -- the perennial VT 110 and 302 in East Barre -- we'd tried a bunch of different smaller remedies with limited success," said Nyquist. "Just because of where it was, with high speeds, we were able to put in a roundabout."

Nyquist noted changes made to Winooski City, which was on the list, which he expects to make a significant difference. "The layout and the geometry of the exit, combined with the traffic...we came up with a significant project that changed all that, we're getting more cars through the intersection."

As to what to look for in trends in highway safety? "Nationwide, they've found that flashing yellow arrows where you have a permitted left turn are an effective tool "As opposed to relying on a sign, they've gone to a flashing yellow arrow, so you can turn, but the way has to be clear. I think you'll be seeing this a lot more. New Hampshire does it on US 4 from Concord to Portsmouth. They are doing it more and more."
