Where are the most dangerous intersections in Maine? While areas in Portland and Augusta had multiple stretches of road topping the lists, other areas in Bangor, Bridgton, Lewiston, and Westbrook made the list.

Duane Burnell with the Maine Department of Transportation assessed the situations facing the various intersections in the state -- and how they're assessed.

"It's a matrix of input you're working with. If it's citizens and town officials, in those cases, we'll get someone out to examine the situation. We'll check here at what the crash history look like. You have to take into account volume -- if you have a high traffic volume, a higher number of crashes for that intersection might not be unusual. In a lower volume of traffic, it would be a concern. We have a good electronic crash reporting system -- that puts in mappable locations, so we can see frequent analytics."

Burnell continued, "I think we're always looking for infrastructure improvements. Can you make signals more visible? Can paint and pavement marking help? You see retro-reflective signing so you just can't miss. There's all sorts of things. In Maine, we have an older population, they especially need the guidance.

You're always trying prioritize -- those that are hurting people the most rise to the top -- those serious injury crashes are the top priority, those are high on the radar, to bring the most attention to fixing."
