11th Annual Interfaith Vigil to be Held at RI State House on Tuesday
Tuesday, January 08, 2019
Victoria Strang with the Rhode Island Interfaith Coalition joined GoLocalProv News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE to talk about the 11th Annual Interfaith Vigil taking place on Tuesday, January 8.
Governor Gina Raimondo and Senate President Dominick Ruggerio are expected to attend the event which anticipates more than 75 clergy — and hundreds of lay people — gathering at the Rhode State House for the annual Fighting Poverty with Faith Vigil at 3 p.m.
“The faith community gathers on the 55th anniversary of President Johnson's War on Poverty to remind our elected officials of their responsibility to those living in poverty,” said Strang. “Working together, we believe that we can improve the lives of all Rhode Islanders and reduce poverty in our state. We believe that all Rhode Islanders deserve food security, affordable housing, decent wages, quality education and accessible healthcare.”
The Rhode Island Interfaith Coalition, whose mission is to fight poverty with faith, was formed in 2008 as part of a national movement. The Coalition believes that as people of faith they are called upon to hold their communities and themselves accountable to the moral standards of justice and compassion that are central to religious traditions.
