LIVE: Rhode Island’s Emerging Leaders—Kevin McGovern
Saturday, February 10, 2018
United Way of Rhode Island and GoLocalProv have teamed up identifying some of the emerging leaders in Rhode Island.
Kevin McGovern has been a member of United Way of Rhode Island’s Young Leaders Circle since 2010, holding various volunteer leadership positions. He is also active with the Cranston Rotary Club. McGovern works as Assistant Vice President and branch manager at The Washington Trust Company.
McGovern also serves as President of the Exeter Town Council. As President, McGovern says he focuses heavily on public safety and finances.
What is one thing you feel everyone can do to help move our state forward?
Everyone can donate some of their time to help. What causes I feel are important, may not be the same causes you support and that’s okay. If we all do a little, a lot gets done.
What are you doing to make Rhode Island Better?
Within my own networks, I consistently encourage others to get involved with charities. My generation is the future. Many foundations and charities are run or driven by older generations and in time they will go away. By getting involved now, we can help foster positive change in society, and I want them to consider making financial donations to the charity especially if its something near and dear to their heart. One of my sayings is “no money, no mission.” Contributions are a necessary part of non-profits that can be ignored.
Who or what inspires you?
My two boys Patrick and Finnigan. I want them to have opportunities to stay in the Ocean State. I want them to be proud of what I’ve accomplished.
Who has been your most important mentor and why?
Tony Maione has been one of my biggest mentors. I serve on United Way’s Community Advisory board and through that board, I had the opportunity to meet with Tony one-on-one several times. He fostered in me a sense of giving back to the community and engaging fellow young professionals to give back.
