Providence Water Chair Xaykham Khamsyvoravong joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on LIVE, after Providence Water and Mayor Jorge Elorza announced the launch of the new "Lead-Free is the Way to Be" program.
According to the city and Prov Water, the program is designed to help the estimated 25,000 homeowners who have private side lead service lines to replace those lines and also to provide customers with a variety of tools to determine if they have lead in their water and how to reduce lead exposure.
Providence Water as part of the initiative announced $1.2 million in funding approved by the Public Utilities Commission and in partnership with the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank to provide property owners with 3-year 0% interest loans to replace their private side lead service lines. According to Prov Water, replacing the private lead service line can cost a property owner, on average, about $3,000.
