Harvard and Socialsphere pollster John Della Volpe joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE to discuss the new statewide poll released on Thursday -- and what he sees as being the deciding factor in 2018 elections in Rhode Island.
"Regardless of what any horse race poll shows, you have 55%...of the electorate [that is hesitant]. That's an incredibly high number," said Della Volpe. "They're open to a variety of options and that's the lesson coming out of this -- it's not close to being decided."
"It's going to be very fluid and I continue to believe the race is going to be decided on not just who has a better economic policy or more clear view regarding healthcare, it's going to be decided on who Rhode Islanders can trust with their finances moving forward," said Della Volpe.
While the poll looked at a number of potential head-to-head scenarios, Della Volpe said there could be a path for all candidates.
"Folks are open to a range of Democrats and independents...putting the resources [in] and campaign and message is something else that has to happen," said Della Volpe.
Della Volpe also noted a new question on the latest poll -- what Rhode Islanders think about corruption.
'[We asked] in view of the state, how do you view it in terms of corruption? Do you think that Rhode Islanders have it worse -- that there's more public corruption in this state compared to others or do we have it better?" said Della Volpe. "We saw that over 60% of Rhode Islanders think this is the most politically corrupt state they can think of."
"That's not surprising -- but these are systematic challenges that need [to be] overcome," said Della Volpe. "Anyone that's going surprise us or emerge has to tap into that lack of trust and deal with it."
