University of Virginia Professor of Political Science Jennifer Lawless joined Go Local News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE on Tuesday, and spoke to the ramifications ahead of the election results in the Massachusetts Democratic Primary -- which saw U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano losing to Ayanna Pressley.
"One of the most important races that will serve as a bellwether is the Massachusetts race between Capuano and Pressley," said Lawless. "He's a relatively popular incumbent -- he was up 10 points in the polls -- but she [is] trying to channel the new kind of energy, the younger fresher face in politics."
"If he's defeated, that sends even one more signal that nobody should be not running scared," said Lawless.
The progressive left crowned its latest star Tuesday, as Ayanna Pressley upended Massachusetts politics and toppled 10-term Democratic Rep. Mike Capuano in a primary.
Pressley, the first woman of color to win a seat on Boston’s city council, is now set to reprise the same feat in Massachusetts’ congressional delegation — part of a wave of young, female and non-white Democrats reshaping their party in the era of President Donald Trump.
