Community Activist Gomes on Lighting RI State House for Black History Month: “Everyone is Important”
Friday, February 23, 2018
Pam Gomes told GoLocal's Kate Nagle that it was her core belief that "everyone is important," when she decided to approach officials at the Rhode Island State House about getting the lights lit up for Black History Month in the colors of the Afro-American flag -- red, black, and green.
Gomes spoke to raising the money needed from the community, addressing lighting issues which made the flag look "Italian," and the overwhelming outpouring of support she has received for making it happen.
On Friday, Gomes is hosting an event at the front of the State House for the community to talk about how to make the dome lighting an annual event.
