In one of the greatest mash-ups ever, Rhode Island's Trinity Repertory Company has partnered with the RI Blood Center for a "Zombie Prevention Blood Drive" on Friday, March 15.

The story behind the unlikely collaboration (not to mention the theme) has everything to do with Social Creatures, Trinity's "post-apocalyptic zombie-dramedy" that opens March 14 and runs through April 21.

“Social Creatures is a play about coming together after cataclysmic crisis," said Curt Columbus, Trinity's Richard L. Bready Artistic Director. "In the face of blizzards, natural disasters - or yes, even the zombie apocalypse, it's organizations like the RI Blood Center that save people’s lives.”

RI Blood Center

RI Blood Center's goal is to collect about 240 pints daily to meet these patient needs. It takes less than an hour to fill out the necessary forms and donate a pint of blood. Trinity Rep and RI Blood Center hope Rhode Islanders will join the cause by giving the Gift of Life - a blood donation - and reward yourself with a ticket to Social Creatures as thanks.

"These two actions combined – seeing Social Creatures and giving blood – may very well be the key to preventing a global zombie outbreak," according to Trinity.

How to hook it all up

Donors are advised to bring identification with a photo or signature and eat well and drink fluids before you donate. Juice and cookies are also provided free after donation. Social Creatures is a “dramedy” about the end of life as we know it, and runs March 14 through April 21 in Trinity Rep's intimate Dowling Theater. Regular and discounted tickets for Social Creatures are on sale now for $28-68 at the Trinity Rep box office, 201 Washington St.; by phone at (401) 351-4242; and online at www.trinityrep.com. The theater guarantees it will be a “zombie-free” zone for the afternoon of the “Zombie Prevention” Blood Drive. During the performances "we cannot make that promise," the theater warns.

To donate blood and platelets individuals must be 17 years of age, weight 110 pounds, and be in general good health. Sixteen-year-olds may donate if they weigh 130 pounds, have a parental permission slip (available on the Blood Center’s web site), and be in general good health. If you have any questions about donating blood, please contact the Blood Center at (401) 453-8307 or visit their website at www.ribc.org. If you have any questions about the Trinity Rep's “Zombie Prevention” Blood Drive, contact Rebecca Noon at [email protected].

Zombie Prevention Blood Drive, Friday, March 15th from 2:30pm-5:30pm at Trinity Repertory Company, 201 Washington St, Providence.
