Summer is the best of times for families... now every week, enjoy inside tips for making the most of your weekend from Anisa Raoof, publisher and founder of Kidoinfo, the parents guide for Rhode Island and beyond.

Kido Tip 1. Splash into Reading with Free Library events.

Rhode Island Libraries have free events and activities all summer long as part of their summer reading program. Cartooning lessons, storytellers, singers such as Marc Bernier, right, bugs and more give kids even more reason to love their library. Check out what’s happening at your local library or visit a new one each week.

Kido Tip 2. Staycation idea: Take a Ride.

No need to go far or spend a lot to feel like you're on vacation. Since you are already saving money on hotels, airfare, or a long car trip by staying home, you may want to splurge on a local excursion by ferry or train. Taking a ferry or train trip can be as much or more fun than the destination itself. Make it a daytrip, instead of staying overnight, and spend a couple of hours exploring the town and having lunch. Remember to pack light but bring some of the essentials depending on the ages of your kids: diapers, extra clothes, water bottles, snacks, paperback books, and small toys. Bonus Activity: Photocopy a map and plot your course by land or water.

Kido Tip 3. Enjoy a Movie Under the Stars this weekend.

Our family loves spending summer nights outdoors. This Sunday, July 25th bring a blanket and a picnic supper to Academy Field in East Greenwich to watch the family film E.T. directed by Steven Spielberg. The movie starts at dusk and is free and open to the public. This film is recommended for children ages 5 and up. For details,  email: [email protected]. Looking for more?
