Summer Is the Season for Shopping for Continuing Education

While Rhode Island's kids may be thrilled to be away from school this summer, it's the perfect time for adults to pick up valuable education and training through continuing education programs at local colleges and universities, as well as to plan a fall program. Here's a round-up of the opportunities.

Rhode Island College

With the first summer session underway, there is still time to enroll in Session II, which runs July 2-August 10. You'll find undergraduate, graduate, traditional, intensives, hybrids, and online courses detailed at www.ric.edu/summersessions. New this year: RIC's Green and Sustainability Studies program, featuring summer courses for every student and community member. Look into the new Certificate of Continuing Study in Green Enterprise Management (GEM), an affordable, noncredit certificate designed for small and medium-sized business, nonprofit, and agency employees and includes concentration options for management, financial, operations and marketing personnel. With a robust schedule of flexible continuing education courses, URI's Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education in downtown Providence offers more than seven Bachelor Degree Programs, Masters Programs, and Certificate Programs. In addition, the campus has a number of University entities dedicated to research and educational excellent, including the:

Johnson & Wales

Looking for continuing ed courses in everything from Microeconomics and Finance to Nutrition and Event Management? JWU's 4-week Session II featuring daytime courses might be just the answer. Classes meeting four days a week for several hours per day. Rhode Island School of Design

Use the summer to browse RISD's broad and unique set of Continuing Education offerings for the Fall 2012 term. Consider programs as varied as Advertising Design, Animation, Comic + Sequential Art, Jewelry + Light Metals, Interior Design, Graphic Design, and Computer-Based Design, among many. And don't forget the RISD offers a series of excellent CE courses at its bucolic satellite campus on Barrington's shore at Tillinghast Farm. To get the process started, go online here.

Salve Regina University

Looking to earn your BS in Accounting, Business Administration, or Marketing? How about a BA in Liberal Studeis or an RN-BS in Nursing. Salve Regina's continuing education programs might be just the fit. New at Salve this fall: continuing education courses will be offered at its new Center for Adult Education in Warwick, an easy commute for many Rhode Islanders who may have found the drive to Salve's campus in Newport a challenge. Further incentive for checking out Salve's CE program: for a limited time, students who apply to a continuing education program will have their $40 application fee waived. Providence College

There's still time to shop for and enroll in PC's Summer Continuing Education session II, which runs from July 2-August 3. Courses range from Human Anatomy and Organic Chemistry to Managerial Accounting, Digital Photography, Leadership Theory and The Sacraments. For more information, go online here.

Brown University

Now housed in a brand-new facility in Providence's Knowledge District at 200 Dyer Street, Brown's Adult & Professional Programs in Continuing Education are richer than ever. Consider programs including the IE Brown Executive MBA, the Brown/Pfizer MA, Continuing Studies, CHOICES - Social Studies Curriculum, Infant & Child Mental Health Workshops, ARISE - Science for RI Educators. There's even a Crime Writing Intensive Writing Workshop this October taking place in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Brown's CE program also offers Undergraduate and Pre-College programs. For businesspeople looking to gain certifications or prepare for them, Bryant's Executive Development Center offers courses and certificates that empower individuals and companies to move to the next level. Courses and programs are taught by experienced faculty who are expert practitioners in their respective fields. Roger Williams University

The School of Graduate and Continuing Studies at Roger Williams University has programs for you, whether you are just starting your undergraduate work, working to complete your degree, looking to advance your career or studying for an advanced degree. RWU offers a variety of bachelor's and master's degrees as well as associate's degrees and undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate certificates. From Literacy and Leadership Education to Construction Management and Clinical Psychology, you'll find rich resources at both the Bristol campus and in downtown Providence.
