Summer Cocktail Heaven: Union Station’s Square Root

Saturday, May 29, 2010

Union Station Brewery in downtown Providence recently won its sixth award for best place to go for a beer in Providence. Apparently, those who voted never tried their signature Square Root. No, it is not a mathematical problem, in fact, it’s the perfect combination of soda and liquor, and truly a drink made for the summer. Trust me on this one.

This perfectly named cocktail is a celebration of all that is root beer. Especially when you consider that Union Station combines Three Olives Root Beer Vodka with its home brew. Union Station has brewed its own root beer for the last three years, and that rich flavor with hints of vanilla and cinnamon perfectly complement the flavored vodka. It's a taste so refreshing that you might forget you are drinking a cocktail.

Is there a way to make this simplest of cocktails even better? Just one way: a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, or my favorite, coffee ice cream, takes you back to your childhood, but in a very adult and much more fun way.

Union Station Brewery, 36 Exchange Terrace, Providence, www.johnharvards.com. Sun-Thur 11:30am - 1am, Fri-Sat 11:30am - 2am.

Elizabeth Perry is a native Rhode Islander and loves the thrill of the hunt for a new cocktail.
