Killer Bloody Mary

Saturday, June 05, 2010

Most drinkers know that the hair of the dog is the morning cure-all for an evening of over-indulgence. If simple follicles won’t do, head over to Harry’s Bar & Burger in Providence and let the dog bite you with a Bloody Murder from Hell, their peppery take on the Bloody Mary. They’ve been open for less than a month, but these unique cocktails already have Harry’s on the map.

This day-drinker's delight takes a minute to prep, which in retrospect feels like waiting for a firing squad. The drink is comprised of house-infused jalapeño vodka and a bloody mix that relies heavily on pickled jalapeño peppers. Topped with a celery stalk, two olives and a lemon, it arrives gloves off and ready to rumble.

The initial sip is all spice, but with a swallow it’s almost refreshing, and there’s no recurring warmth in the chest; it’s like getting smacked and then being apologized to. If you’re not a morning person, this will sure as hell wake you up. If you are a morning person, I’m sorry.

The mashed jalapeños and pepper float freely in opaque beverage, daring you to keep drinking. The olives and celery help, but this is definitely not a drink for the weak of will. Coupled with some sloppy fries (salt, pepper, cheese and jalapeños), it’s the breakfast of champions (depending on your sport, of course.)

If drinking before noon isn’t your thing, there are plenty of nighttime cocktails and an extensive beer list for when the sun goes down, as well as hard milkshakes and floats for dessert. The menu is packed with hearty offerings, including burgers (all in slider form), hot dogs and hot sandwiches. Of course if you’re looking to attempt the Bloody Murder from Hell in its natural morning setting, Harry’s opens every day at 11:30 am.

Harry's Bar & Burger, 121 North Main St, Providence, 228-7437, www.harrysbarburger.com, open Sun-Thurs 11:30am-1am, Fri-Sat 'til 2am.
