‘Sex and Money’ Film + Panel Coming to URI

Human trafficking remains one of society's most ethically indefensible events, and a team of young documentarians are bringing their investigation of the topic to the screen at URI this Friday.
Day One and the URI Women’s Center will be host to the screening of the documentary Sex and Money: A National Search for Human Worth, on Friday, August 19th from 6 to 9 P.M at the Center for Bio Technology and Life Sciences Building at URI, located at 120 Flagg Road in Kingston, RI. The event is free and open to the public.
A passion for justice and photography, in search of truths
The documentary, created by a group of student photojournalists whose passion for justice and photography led to the creation of the compelling piece, takes a closer look at the realities of the unsettling topic of human trafficking. The group of students travelled across the nation to over 30 different states where they conducted over 75 interviews with victims, agents, politicians, psychologists, activists, porn-stars, and others.
“This film and panel discussion present an opportune way to further the dialogue around the unfortunate reality of human trafficking, and what can be done about it,” said Peg Langhammer, Executive Director of Day One. “It is happening right here in Rhode Island, and is an issue that needs to be talked about.”
Panel to feature local enforcement officers, advocates
Panelists in attendance for discussion following the film will include Rhode Island Assistant Attorney General Bethany Macktaz Moore, Lieutenant Michael Correia with the Providence Police Department, and Sarah Decataldo from Day One.
“The panel discussion following the film will focus on how law enforcement entities and community groups are addressing ways to combat human trafficking and sexual coercion,” said Langhammer. “We encourage people to come learn more and take part in this important conversation.”
