Spotted in Warwick: rock heartthrob Gavin DeGraw

November was a month full of celebration in Providence. First there was the 375th birthday party of the city, held at the PPAC with Deer Tick, and a week later on November 30, 95.5 WBRU celebrated its 42nd Birthday Bash at Lupo's. New Zealand rockers The Naked and Famous started out the evening, followed by Young the Giant, who performed at the MTV VMA's earlier this year. But the main act was electronic dance-punk duo Matt & Kim, with drummer Kim Schifino of East Providence. They put on a show to remember, with Kim jumping on top of her bass drum (sometimes almost falling), walking out over the crowd, and making vulgar jokes before apologizing to the 20-odd members of her family in the audience. And although the two make their home in Brooklyn, NY now, when Kim walked out after the show holding a glass of red wine in one hand and a hot wiener in the other, there was no debate as to what state she really calls home...

Some lucky music fans were treated to a special show by singer Gavin DeGraw on Friday. In an intimate acoustic performance presented by 92.3 PRO FM, DeGraw played five songs at the Ironworks Tavern in Warwick. His hit songs include "Chariot" and "I Don't Want to Be," and his short set included "Not Over You," from his new album Sweeter. Afterwards, he met and spent time talking to everyone who had came to see him...

One of today's most famous young actresses now has a reason to come to Providence. Anne Hathaway, star of hit movies such as The Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada, announced her engagement last week to Brown University class of 2003 graduate Adam Shulman. Shulman is an actor who has appeared in television series The West Wing among others, and this year he co-founded the jewelry line James Banks with Heidi Naser Fink. Shulman has chosen to remain pretty mysterious to the media, politely rejecting interview requests, and his Brown friends and professors have remained similarly lock-lipped about him. But luckily for us, his ten-year class reunion at Brown is less than two years away...

Patriot with a big heart: Deion Branch

New England's football players are patriots on and off the field. Last week they teamed up with Project Undercover, an organization working to get diapers and underclothes to impoverished children in Rhode Island, to give back to the community they represent. Receivers Deion Branch, Wes Welker, Matthew Slater, and Julian Edelman were at the Rhode Island Convention Center signing photographs, collectibles, and memorabilia in return for donations to the charity. The group worked with the Deion Branch Charitable Foundation to put this event on, proving that our team is the best, and not only in terms of athletics...

Chris Matthews wasn't playing "hardball" this weekend in Barrington. The political talk show host made an appearance at Barrington Books to meet and and sign copies of his new book about President John F. Kennedy, called Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero. Over 1,000 people showed up to see him, so many that the bookstore had to use an empty storefront as a waiting area. Who knew there were so many politicos in the Ocean State?

Young journalism superstar Andrew Ross Sorkin spoke at Brown on Monday. The Cornell grad, who splits his time as a financial columnist for The New York Times and co-anchor of CNBC's Squawk Box (in addition to writing the best seller Too Big to Fail), spoke of our nation's current financial state and his own experiences in journalism. And in an interview with the Brown Daily Herald, he advised students to find what they are really passionate about and go for it, and to make sure to hustle because nothing comes easy. Sage wisdom from a fellow Ivy Leaguer...

Pauly D took a break from filming his Jersey Shore spin-off show Pauly's World to get in a little beauty treatment last week. He was seen getting his eyebrows threaded at Sukhy's Threading Salon in Pawtucket. I have to admit, I am surprised that he doesn't just gel them up...
