Gospel-singing Idol Jacob Lusk hits Providence Place

There was one big name on everyone’s minds this weekend, but even Irene couldn’t keep the rich and famous from New England.

You might have seen them singing their hearts out on TV last winter, and if you were at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Saturday, you saw them live. The American Idol Live! tour stopped in Providence, where the top eleven finalists from season 10 of American Idol performed to an excited crowd. While winner Scotty McCreery and runner-up Lauren Alaina put on fantastic shows, crowd favorite Pia Toscano and controversial contender Casey Abrams were also hits with the audience. In addition, Jacob Lusk (who finished in fifth place) was seen shopping for some shades in Sunglass Hut at the Providence Place Mall before the show. Well, every big musician needs a good pair of sunglasses for avoiding paparazzi…

Move over, Irene... the Big Man himself stopped by with the First Family for a quick vacation. That’s right, President Obama, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha were seen relaxing off the coast last week. President Obama didn’t let the weather stop him from playing a few rounds of golf on Martha’s Vineyard while the girls designed bags, belts, and hats on Nantucket at the Cheryl Fudge Fashion Camp and shopped at currentVintage. Some people may have wondered if it was the best time for Obama to take some time off, considering the earthquakes and hurricanes and stock market, but even a world leader needs to take a break every once and a while. And what better place to do it than in sunny (well, usually) New England…

Hunky Jonathan Lovitz in the PVD house of style

It may not have all the glitz and glam of New York Fashion Week, but Styleweek Providence is making a name for itself as a New England fashion destination. All this week, fashion designers and other industry members are coming to Providence for runway shows, exhibitions, and of course, after-parties. Among the guests are Project Runway stars Peach Carr (season 8), David Chum (season 9), and Jonathan Joseph Peters (season 7), who will be showing their collections. The January Styleweek featured Real Housewives of NY stars as “Style Ambassadors,” and this time we have celebrity stylist Derek “Fabulous” Warburton and Logo TV’s Jonathan Lovitz filling those roles. The stylish events are taking place at the Providence Performing Arts Center, and you may catch some celebrities at Ruth’s Chris Steak House or Aspire after hours…

California loves Shepard Fairey! Just a few weeks ago the famous street artist’s work was featured in a group show at the LA Museum of Contemporary Art that broke previous attendance records, and last weekend his art was highlighted at the West End Celebration in Sand City, CA (a city on Monterey Bay). Local art collector and friend of Fairey Andrew Jackson displayed over 46 pieces of Fairey’s work in an exhibit called Shepard Fairey: An Exhibition of Fine Art Prints, drawing hundreds of buyers and art fans. The Rhode Island School of Design grad and Providence icon has become somewhat of a superstar in the art world, with his name in the same group as other artists Banksy and David Cho, and his now ubiquitous Obama “Hope” poster certainly helped boost his fame. The collection will be up for another 30 days if you happen to be in California during that time…

He’s on TV, he’s on the radio, and Ernie Boch Jr. proved just how much he loves the limelight when he hosted a mega end-of-summer bash at his mansion in Norwood, MA last Saturday night. Over 600 people braved the storm to attend the party, which included a performance by temperamental rock star Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver. Guests at the auto mogul’s big shindig included media personalities, musicians, business owners, and more big names from the New England region. There was also food provided by celebrity chefs Ming Tsai and Tony Ambrose. If you think this sounds like a crazy party, don’t even get me started on the belly dancers and near-drownings in the pool…
