PUMA's Mar Mostro, at work

While you might think that with the end of summer, Newport's sailing season might be winding down.

Think again. October brings the opening of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12, and Newport sailors and boats always play a major role. While the Newport-based PUMA Ocean Racing Team's Mar Mostro heads to Spain for its starting leg at the end of the month, join Sail Newport for an action-packed multi-media night on Tuesday, October 18 that will bring the high seas, big boats, and crashing waves, into your life.

A night of big-ocean drama

Skipper and Newport resident Ken Read will be joined by fellow crew members Casey Smith and Rome Kirby, also Newport residents, on stage at the Jane Pickens theater, along with Newport sailor Mick Harvey who will give his first-hand report on the harrowing ordeal of the Newport-based race boat Rambler 100, which suffered a catastrophic keel loss and capsize at sea off the coast of Ireland recently in the Fastnet Race. Jerry Kirby, another Newport resident and professional sailor, was one of 21 crew members miraculously rescued by the Irish Coast Guard in the incident and will be at the event as well.
