An improvement in student-teacher ratios at Scituate High School drove the ranking upgrade, landing the school in the Top 10 for the first time, at #9.

Things just got a little more personal at Scituate High School--enough to propel the school into the Top 10 for the first time, at #9.

Improving its student-teacher ratio from 10-1 in 2011 to 9-1 to 2012, combined with increases in Math and Writing NECAPs, gave Scituate High enough momentum to go from a #11 ranking in 2011 up two spots (and past #10-ranked Classical High School) to this year's #9 spot.

These factors overcame significantly lower SAT performances this year on all 3 measurements. Math experienced the largest drop of 28 points from an average score of 530 in 2011, to 502 in 2012. Scituate students' Verbal scores dropped 15 points down to 511 and Writing dropped 13 points to 504. Scituate also spends $12,667 per pupil--the second-lowest amount in 2012's Top 10 line-up.

It's a testimony to the power of small class size as a factor in school quality, that Scituate rose despite its compromising SAT performance this year. Other factors that helped Scituate earn its Top 10 slot include a graduation rate of 90.6%—the fourth-best rate in an all-star group.
