RI Foundation Offering Major Grants to LGBTQ Organizations
Saturday, March 26, 2011
Equity Action, a fund established by The Rhode Island Foundation to provide support for the state’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities, is seeking applications for project and capacity-building grants. Grants range from $2,500 to $10,000 and applications are due April 15, 2011.
“We hope nonprofits that are serving the LGBTQ communities in Rhode Island as well as mainstream organizations that want to initiate or expand LGBTQ-specific programming apply for funding,” said Owen Heleen, vice president for grant programs at the Foundation.
Money to empower organizations
Equity Action has awarded grants totaling nearly $506,536 in the past seven years. Successful applicants will address the community’s priority needs as presented in Meet the Neighbors through the empowerment of under-represented individuals in LGBTQ communities. Project and capacity-building grants will support projects that build the capacity of organizations that play a vital and unique role in the LGBTQ communities. Organizations can receive one project and capacity-building grant award per year.
Nine grants totaling $44,600 were awarded in 2010 to:
- Comprehensive Community Action (CCAP)
- East Bay Center
- Flickers Arts Collaborative
- Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders
- Kaleidoscope Theatre
- Marriage Equality Rhode Island Education Fund
- Rhode Island Pride
- Shifting Visions Films Education Project Inc
- Youth Pride, Inc.
