RI Beekeepers Host Bee School

It may be hard to think about the perennial signs of spring when there’s snow on the ground and more to come, but this time of year, the Rhode Island Beekeepers Association (RIBA) is gearing up to educate novice beekeepers on the how-to’s of this all-important eco-hobby. RIBA teaches beginner beekeeping classes every year in February and March with topics ranging from the equipment needed to get started, choosing an apiary and installing package bees.

Signs of Spring

Sanne Kure-Jensen, a NOFA Accredited Organic Land Care Professional, URI Master Gardener, and beekeeper, will be presenting an overview on beekeeping in Rhode Island during a free talk at the Portsmouth Free Public Library on Tuesday, March 1. Kure-Jensen will also talk about candles and other products like salves and cosmetics made with beeswax, honey or propolis, and will stress organics and their importance in the home garden and lawn.

The Rhode Island Beekeepers Association course fee is $50 per person, plus $5 per person for additional family members in the same household, and includes a copy of the textbook and all handouts.
