Rhode Island’s Most Popular Dogs
Saturday, April 07, 2012
Vetstreet, a popular Web site for Vets and lovers of animals, has named the Top Dogs Across America, not only naming the most popular breeds across the country, but breaking down the canine popularity contest down by state.
So what's the top dog in Rhode Island?
According to Vetstreet, the American Pit Bull Terrier took top honors in the Ocean State as the most popular breed, followed by the Labrador Retriever at #2 and the Shih Tzu at #3.
The Pit Bull, RI's #1 pick, was a top-three breed in 28 states, according to Vetstreet. It came as no surprise, perhaps, that the Labrador Retriever, RI's #2 dog, was the most popular in the vast majority of states--42, to be exact. The Lab has long been ranked the most popular dog in the country by the American Kennel Club. In fact, there was only state in the entire US where the Lab was not in the Top 3: Nevada.
Other big favorites nationwide were the Chihuahua, which ranked in the Top 3 in 34 states. The Yorkshire Terrier and the German Shepherd Dog made the Top 5 in 37 states.
Collies, bulldogs, and doodles
Vetstreet's Kristen Seymour pointed out several Wild Card performers in various regions. The Border Collie, for instance, made the top 10 in three locales: Idaho, South Dakota and Wyoming. "We don't think it's a coincidence that all three states have plenty of wide-open spaes, so the active breed can work and run," wrote Seymour.
The Bulldog made the Top 10 in 10 states, which may have something to do with the breed's popularity as a mascot. (Nine out of the 10 states have colleges that have adopted the breed as a sports symbol.)
According to Seymour, designer mixes have been "working their way into our hearts and homes" as well, with the Labradoodle nabbing a tenth place in Oregon, and the Goldendoodle fetching ninth in Wisconsin.
