Renowned Swedish Poet, Nobel Committee Member to Speak at Providence College

Did you ever wonder how the Nobel Prizes are really chosen?
Get an inside view of the process, at least of the Prize for Literature, when Nobel Literature Committee member and acclaimed Swedish poet Kjell Espmark speaks at Providence College on April 13.
A member of the Swedish Academy since 1981 and chair of the Nobel Literature Committee from 1988 to 2004, Espmark is expected to address such topics as past winners of the literature prize, the current literary and political criteria of the Nobel Literature Committee, and the status of America’s premier novelists and poets from the perspective of his fellow committee members.

This is the first time Espmark has spoken publicly in the US. about the Nobel literature prize process. The tour is in conjunction with the celebration of the release of his latest collection of poetry, Lend Me Your Voice, (Marick Press, 2010).
A world-renowned poet, novelist, literary historian, and scholar, Espmark is professor emeritus of the history of literature at Stockholm University. He has written more than a dozen volumes of poetry, including his collection of poetry from 1956 to 2009, Det enda nödvändiga or, The Only Necessary. His poetry has been translated into approximately 20 languages.
Espmark also has authored a series of novels called Glömskans tid or, The Age of Oblivion, and has written 10 books of literary criticism, including The Nobel Prize in Literature: A Study of the Criteria Behind the Choices.
Wednesday April 13, at 8pm. at Providence College. The lecture will be held in the Feinstein Academic Center, room 400. This event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Department of English and the Office of Academic Affairs.
