Providence’s Wheeler School to Host Diversity Conference

The Association of Independent Schools of New England's 2014 Middle School Diversity Conference will be held at The Wheeler School November 15.
From 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. over 300 students from all over New England will attend the conference and participate in various workshops that will revolve around themes of diversity, self- esteem, and the acceptance of other cultures in society.
"We're excited that all of these kids can come to our beautiful campus and that they will get to see the city of Providence," says Laurie Flynn, Communications Director at The Wheeler School. "We're happy to host an event that will allow our students to really talk about issues that will affect them and their future as adolescents."

Keynote speakers for the event include: Dr. Michael Fowlin, an actor and psychologist who will focus on peer mediation, diversity training, gender equality, and violence prevention, and Brown University student Julmar E. Carcedo, Jr. an openly gay native of the Philippines who will speak about race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and socioeconomic class issues.
There will also be two student performances by the 898 Steppers from Milton Academy and the Wheeler Middle School Jazz Band.
