Citizens Bank Donates to RI Food Bank for Every PawSox Strike-Out

Saturday, July 02, 2011

Baseball fans and all Rhode Islanders alike now have extra incentive to root for PawSox pitching this summer. The Red Sox AAA affiliate will team up with Rhode Island Food Bank and the Citizens Bank Foundation to make a $75 donation for every strike out this season, up to a total of $75,000.

Based on last season's 1,000 strikeouts, Citizens Bank expects this year's donation to match last year's generous donation of $75,000. The money will be donated to the “Striking out Hunger” campaign and will support the Rhode Island Food Bank’s Kids Café, which provides healthy meals to impoverished Rhode Islanders.

Checking the stats

Considering last years pitching staff was 10th out of 14 in strikeouts in the International League, fans can hope for a more overpowering performance on this year’s club.

Even with the departure of last years strikeout leader Fabio Castro, the squad is on pace to eclipse last year’s number.  The new leader Kyle Weiland sets the standard with 81 punch-outs in 15 appearances. With 68 of 144 games yet to be played, the PawSox have already recorded 623 K’s, a current pace of 1,211 for the full season.

Check out the PawSox tonight at McCoy Stadium as they host the Rochester Red Wings.
